Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Greyville, Durban, South Africa. It opened in 1844, at Avondale Rd.
History
The history of horse racing in KwaZulu Natal goes back well over 150 years, with the first meeting held in July 1844, close to the site of the present course. It is now located at 150 Avondale Road, Greyville, Durban, 4001, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, situated in the very heart of the city, and is easily accessible from all parts of Durban. It features a Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1996, it also became the first track in South Africa to successfully install Floodlights, enabling the course to accommodate night racing at all its midweek meetings. One of the meetings held at the racecourse is the Durban July which is also currently sponsored by Vodacom. Another prestigious meeting held at the track is the Greyville Gold Cup, both Group One races that annually draw the best horses from around the country.
On June 27, 2019, Hollywoodbets was announced as the naming rights sponsor for Greyville and Scottsville racecourses in a 3-year deal. The racecourses will now be known as Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse and Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse.
Track Details
The track is pear-shaped that covers a distance of 2,800 meters. It has an uphill section from the 2,400 meters mark up to 1,800 meters, after that a gentle downward slope for about 800 meters, then an uphill section follows from the 800 meters into the straight, and an almost level 500 meters final straight to Greyville’s famed winning post. A 2,000 meters all-weather “Polytrack” was also constructed inside the existing turf track in 2014, with the first races held in June that year. The track’s infield holds the Royal Durban Golf Club’s Championship golf course.
