Track Details
Main Course
- York Racecourse is used for Thoroughbred flat racing, not harness racing.
- The main course is a left-handed, flat turf course.
- York has a U-shaped layout, with sweeping turns and very few undulations.
- York is a wide, galloping track that is considered one of the fairest courses in Britain.
- The course is best suited to long-striding gallopers who can travel smoothly and build momentum.
- The round course is roughly 2 miles and has a long home straight with a run-in of almost 5 furlongs.
- York has a straight course for 5-furlong and 6-furlong races.
- Races over 7 furlongs start from a chute, but this remains part of the main course layout.
- The track became a full circuit in 2005.
- York can become very testing when the ground turns soft.
- York generally has little strong draw bias, though runners on the straight course often race toward the centre of the track.
- In testing conditions, fields have often come more down the centre of the track.
- York’s long straight makes race timing important, as horses that move too early can be caught late, while strong finishers can sweep into contention close to the wire.
