Grand River Raceway
Grand River Raceway is a horse-racing track in Elora, Ontario, Canada. It opened in 2003, at Wellington County Road 21.
History of Grand River Raceway
2003 – Grand River Raceway opened in Elora, Ontario, as a multi-use racing, gaming, dining, and entertainment facility after relocating from the former Elmira Raceway property.
2004 – Grand River Raceway opened for live Standardbred harness racing on April 24 and became the new home of the Battle of Waterloo after the race moved from Elmira Raceway.
2009 – The Battle of the Belles was added as the companion race to the Battle of Waterloo for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing fillies.
2021 – Plans were developed to reconfigure Grand River Raceway’s racing surface from a half-mile track to a 5/8-mile track.
2023 – Grand River Raceway celebrated its 20th racing season, and work began on the track expansion project during that season.
2024 – Grand River Raceway opened its new 5/8-mile racetrack, replacing the former half-mile configuration and beginning a new racing era for the Elora harness track.

Grand River Raceway Harness Track
- Grand River Raceway is a Standardbred harness racing venue with a flat 5/8-mile oval, expanded from its former half-mile layout before the 2024 racing season.
- The racing surface has a granular base with a stonedust cushion.
- The homestretch is 80 feet wide and 350 feet long.
- The starting gate is listed as 8 + 1 trailer.
- The track has no hubrail and includes a passing lane.
- The larger 5/8-mile configuration gives horses more room than the former half-mile layout, while the 350-foot homestretch remains an important track measurement for reviewing race position and trip notes.
- Grand River Raceway publishes post-position and winning-trip statistics, making post position and race placement useful items to review when handicapping the track.

- Grand River Raceway operates on a 53-acre property that includes live harness racing, simulcast wagering, The GrandWay Events Centre, dining areas, and Elements Casino Grand River.
Grandstand and Tarmac Area
- Admission to the tarmac and grandstand area is free.
- Seating is not reserved on regular race nights.
- Trackside attendance opens before the first race on live race nights.
- Spectators can watch live racing, place wagers, purchase programs, and access food and drink service from the race-night areas.

Captain’s Quarters
- Captain’s Quarters is an indoor tiered-seating area overlooking the racetrack.
- Captain’s Quarters is used for first-come, first-served seating on regular race nights.

🐎 Live Racing Schedule
- Grand River Raceway’s live racing season runs from June through September.
- Live racing is scheduled mainly on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights.
- Regular first-race post time is 6:20 p.m.
- Trackside attendance opens at 5:30 p.m. on regular race nights.
- Most regular race nights feature 10 to 12 live races.
- Industry Day is the main schedule exception, with a special afternoon race card.
Major Race Events
- 🐴 Industry Day – Industry Day is Grand River Raceway’s hallmark race-season event, held annually on Civic Holiday Monday with a special afternoon card highlighted by the Battle of Waterloo and the Battle of the Belles.
- 🐴 Battle of Waterloo – The Battle of Waterloo is Grand River Raceway’s signature race for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing colts, originally held at Elmira Raceway from 1998 through 2003 before moving to Grand River Raceway in 2004.
- 🐴 Battle of the Belles – The Battle of the Belles is the companion race to the Battle of Waterloo for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing fillies, added in 2009 and held as part of the Industry Day program.

- The raceway is located on the edge of the village of Elora.
- Race-night entry is first-come, first-served through the far east gate or through The GrandWay front entrance.
- The live racing area is open to all ages.
- Pets are not allowed, except service dogs.
Admission and Parking
- Admission to the tarmac and grandstand area is free.
- Parking is free.
- The raceway lists a large parking lot for guests.
- No pre-registration is required for regular race-night attendance.
