It originally began on the southeast outskirts, in the small village of Linton. However, they were unable to buy land at Linton but eventually found a new site situated off York Road in 1891. Situated near the market town of Wetherby in West Yorkshire, England, and 12 miles (19 km) from Leeds city center.
The racecourse is operated by Wetherby Steeplechase Committee Ltd., and it is the starting point for the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride, from Wetherby to Filey. Wetherby Racecourse railway station served the racecourse from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Aside from horse racing, it holds a market and car boot sale every Sunday in the Course Enclosure. Then since 2006, the racecourse has been the venue for the Mascot Gold Cup, the world’s largest Mascot race held over the final furlong on their family day meeting each April.
It is the last racecourse in Yorkshire that hosted only National Hunt jump meetings but now stages Flat racing too. The course announced early in 2014 that they were investigating staging summer Flat racing and were granted four fixtures when the 2015 list was released in October 2014. The first Flat racing fixture took place on April 26, 2015.
The racecourse is set in 300 acres of parkland. Flat racing is held in a left-handed, flat, and approximately a mile and a half in circumference track. There is no straight sprint track, and because of the position of the bends, sprints are run over 5½ furlongs, starting on a chute near the end of the back straight. Races for National Hunt is held in a left-handed and galloping track with nine fences.
