New Plymouth Raceway

New Plymouth Raceway is a horse-racing track in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. It opened in 1849, at Rogan Street, Welbourn.

History

The first meeting held in the Taranaki region was on January 1, 1849, while the Taranaki Racing Club was formed in 1876, then the club first organized races as early as 1886. In 1999, the Taranaki Racecourse was renamed after a public competition led to Pukekura Raceway being the most popular proposal. It is located at New Plymouth Raceway Rogan St, Welbourn 4310, on the main road into New Plymouth from the south, within the city limits of New Plymouth. Adjacent to the World Famous Pukekura Park.

Both Opunake and Taranaki Racing Clubs host the meetings. The club prides itself on being one of New Zealand’s leading provincial racing clubs and is renowned for its innovativeness.
