Roscommon Racecourse

Roscommon Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Roscommon, County Roscommon, Ireland. It opened in 1837 at Racecourse Rd, Carrownabrickna.

History

Racing unofficially commenced in 1837, organized by the British Military, with the first official contests occurring in 1885. Apart from a 12-year hiatus between 1936 and 1948, racing has continued ever since. It is located at Roscommon, County Roscommon, Ireland, approximately 76 km Northeast of Galway and 136 km west of Dublin.

Track Details

It hosts both Flat and National Hunt (jumps). The track for flat races is a right-handed oval of nearly one and a quarter-mile with a run-in of three and a half furlongs. The turns are sharp, but it is essentially a fair track. For National Hunt, it is also right-handed but rectangular of around a mile and a quarter in extent. The course is generally flat, though the home straight of over three furlongs is more undulating. The turns are sharp, and the course favors the handier type of horse. There are five easy fences to a circuit with a run-in of around 200 yards.

It offers a Buffet Restaurant, a self-service restaurant, and Full offers Bar and Snack facilities that can accommodate up to 150 people. A Main Bar is located beneath the Stand (which offers Beef Rolls, Sandwiches, and other refreshments). Toilets and Baby Changing Facilities are also available
