Belmont Oaks & Derby

A ton of rain Thursday will be cleared out by Saturday so the Belmont Oaks and Derby should be on a turf course with some give to it. Aidan O’ Brien sends two serious racehorses to compete in the Grade 1 events in filly Santa Barbara and colt Bolshoi Ballet. Ryan Moore who rode Friday at Newmarket is scheduled to make the trip, so you know the intentions are good. That said both races have a few interesting alternatives. The Belmont Oaks at a mile and a quarter is a nice race. Con Lima [...]

The Ticket Structure Debate

There has been so much talk about ticket structure lately, and despite all the good points that some people make, most bettors still employ horrible ticket structure. Bad ticket structure combined with all the other hurdles will kill you before the announcer says, “they’re off.” I have done many articles on Past the Wire on ticket structure. It is a key component. I have done seminars, and even this recent video on it.  Fundamentals and beating the game It really all comes down to going against the innate desire to cash more tickets, so use more [...]

Saturday Spots June 26th, 2021

Even with California racing on what I’d call a brief hiatus and Saratoga and Del Mar on the horizon, and Churchill Downs winding down, I thought there were some interesting spots on Saturday. Specifically, there was a race at Belmont and a race at Thistledown, The Ohio Derby that drew my attention. I’ll start with the Ohio Derby. Key Horse Races & Expert Handicapper Bets – June 26, 2021

Lady Jacqueline Stakes - Race 8 at Thistledown - Post Time 4:14 PM Eastern Contenders: Gran Baby is the “X Factor” in this field as she’s making her U.S. debut. She has a strong record of 5-2-3 in 13 races in her native Chile, the last two of those against males where she won one and finished second in the other. Since importing to the U.S. and into the Ken McPeek barn she’s been in fairly steady training and gets Lanerie. The nine furlong trip is of no concern as the mare has won [...]

Key Horse Races & Expert Handicapper Bets – June 12, 2021

Race 7 at Belmont - Post Time 4:06 PM Eastern Subsidiary, Whispering Pines, Entreat and Love and Love are the win contenders. Subsidiary gets slight preference among four horses which can win as she’s coming off a brilliant seven length score at a mile over the track. That was her first start at Belmont in a long time, after shipping up from Florida and Rodriguez rode her for the first time and rides back for the hot Noda barn. Cutting back to seven furlongs is no problem as she won at the distance in [...]
