This weekend’s three-year-old stakes are more than just another set of prep races. The Tampa Bay Derby and the San Felipe Stakes essentially secure a place in the Kentucky Derby starting gate for the winner.

The timing is ideal. Win now, grab the points, and you still have enough runway to regroup, recharge, and be ready when the gates open on the first Saturday in May.

Tampa Bay Derby: Experience vs. Upside

The Kentucky Derby points in the Tampa Bay Derby look very much up for grabs between Further Ado and Canaletto.

On Saturday, the edge probably belongs to Further Ado, and it’s not a complicated case to make. He’s simply more seasoned. In these Derby preps, experience can matter. Horses who have already been through the wars—different pace scenarios, real race pressure, and the physical demands of multiple starts—often hold an advantage over one or two race types.

Further Ado brings that seasoning.

Canaletto, on the other hand, has just a single start, but the talent is obvious. And when the horse is trained by Chad Brown, you ignore that at your own risk. Brown is absolutely lethal when stepping a horse from a maiden win straight into an important stakes race, especially when the barn believes the talent warrants the move.

Still, there’s another layer to the Canaletto story.

There’s a strong sense that the Preakness Stakes may ultimately be the bigger target, rather than the Run for the Roses. Chad stated as much publicly. With only one race under his belt, the Tampa Bay Derby could be more about development than a full-throttle Derby push.

If that’s the case, Further Ado’s seasoning may simply prove too much at this stage.

But the race doesn’t end there.

Powershift enters as a maiden, which might scare some bettors away. Mistake. He comes out of a sharp race where he ran big behind a very good-looking winner, and his connections know exactly what they’re doing.

A maiden? Yes. A surprise? Not really.

If Powershift takes a step forward off that effort, he fits the type who can jump up and shake things up.

San Felipe Stakes: Maybe Not Baffert’s Day

Out west, the San Felipe Stakes could present something we haven’t seen often in recent California Derby preps:

A race Bob Baffert might not win.

That’s not because he won’t have talent in the gate—it’s because the race shape may set up for others. Both Bob’s horses have the credentials and talent to win, albeit for different reasons, but:

Both Start the Ride and Secured Freedom bring something very important into this race:

They can finish.

And if the pace develops the way it appears it might on paper—with legitimate early pressure and the possibility of a contested lead—that finishing ability becomes a powerful weapon.

When the speed horses soften each other up, the race often gets decided by the runner who is still moving forward when everyone else begins to flatten out.

That scenario puts both of these horses squarely in play.

Between the two, I give a slight lean to Secured Freedom. His late run looks a bit more dangerous if the fractions heat up early, and in a race where pace could be the defining factor, that edge matters.

Timing Is Everything

What makes both the Tampa Bay Derby and the San Felipe especially compelling is where they fall on the Derby trail.

These races offer the kind of points haul that can essentially lock in a Derby berth.

Win here, and the pressure is off. Connections can focus on keeping the horse healthy, happy, and progressing rather than scrambling for points in April.

In Derby prep season, that kind of positioning is invaluable.

And this weekend, a few three-year-olds have a chance to grab exactly that.
