The Woodward may not quite have the prestige it once did but it is still a great horse race, and this year looks to have possible Breeders’ Cup ramifications. At least a few of these must have their eyes on the big show if they can step up and run a big one.
We’ll look at the Woodward and see how it shakes out.
Dr. Post breaks from the rail and will have to rally from off the pace to win this. I don’t think the one turn does him any favors or does the pace set up. I’ll pass.
Maxfield will get plenty of attention and support in the wagering. He adds blinkers in what I view as a move to try and improve him a bit after being somewhat exposed last out. I think he is a nice horse but not as good as most thought he was. I don’t think he wins this.
Art Collector is another who lived mostly off reputation but since moving to Bill Mott’s barn that changed. He seems to have come into his own and he’s fast, fit, still fresh and dangerous. I think he can take these all the way and I like the turn back to one turn from the who knows how many turns race at Charlestown. Luis Saez only helps the cause as you know he will take it to them.
Mo Gotcha has some pace but is a cut below these. He may entertain Art Collector early, or perhaps give him a brief target if Saez goes that way, but I doubt he is a factor when it counts.
Code of Honor would have handled these on his best day. I am not sure if he is still that good, but Shug is keeping him around. If he still has it, he is a major player if not the horse to beat. I think it is interesting Shug stuck with Paco. They’ll have to show me they still got it.
I am not sure if Forza Di Oro is the other Mott or not. I think he will get his share of attention. He likes Belmont and I believe he still has upside. If Art Collector gets beat, I think this other Mott runner could be the one to do it. I thought he would run better in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but I am willing to give him a pass for that one.
