Gulfstream Park

Gulfstream Park is a horse racing track in Hallandale Beach, Florida. It opened in 1939, at the 901 S Federal Hwy.

History of Gulfstream Park

1939 – Although Gulfstream Park opened in February 1939, it was closed after only four days of racing due to bankruptcy. 

1944 – James Donn Sr. reopened Gulfstream in 1944.

1952 – The Florida Derby (later became Grade 1 and an important part of the Kentucky Derby) was inaugurated, and a clubhouse was created. 

1955 – It introduced the Donn Handicap, now acknowledged as one of the nation’s most renowned events for older horses.

1959 – Gulfstream Park opened their first turf course

1961 – James Donn Jr. became president and created the world’s largest tote board in 1961.

1972 – Gulfstream park was awarded “middle dates” and allowed to expand its races from 20 days to 40 days running from January to April.

1986 – The entire track was enhanced, including a domed dining area called the Gulfdome.

1989 – The Gulfstream Park Racetrack was selected to host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time.

1990’s – Gulfstream Park changed ownership several times. Bertram and Diana Firestone purchased it in 1990, and then it was acquired by Gulfstream Holdings Inc., an Orient Corporation (USA) subsidiary, in 1991. In September 1999, Magna Entertainment Corporation (MEC) finally owned Gulfstream Park. 

2002 – The track opened its Thoroughbred training facility in Palm Beach County.

2006 – Magna opened its slot casino in 2006.

2010 – the ownership of the track changed again and was acquired by Magna parent MI Developments Inc. (MID).

2011 – The track was purchased again by the Stronach Group on July 3, 2011, the current owner of the racetrack.

2017 – The Pegasus World Cup was introduced, earning the Grade 1 rating. It was later known as the Pegasus World Cup turf race when the purse amount was reduced to $7 million.

2022 – 1/ST EXPERIENCE in partnership with Breakwater Hospitality Group, founded the Carousel Club at Gulfstream Park. It is a 14,000-square-foot entertainment and hospitality hotspot featuring a carousel bar at Gulfstream Park trackside.

Pegasus and Dragon statue portrays a Pegasus beating a dragon in Gulfstream Park. It is 110-foot (34 m), the third-tallest statue in the United States after the Birth of the New World in Puerto Rico and the Statue of Liberty in New York

Location and Access to the Racecourse

  • Gulfstream Park is located at 901 South Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach, Florida, two miles east of I-95. 
  • It is also situated between Fort Lauderdale and Miami International Airports and one mile from the Atlantic Ocean.
