The Vosburgh has a long and storied history. For many years it was the premiere seven-furlong race in the country. That has somewhat changed but it is still an important sprint, and this year will be run for the first time at the new Belmont Park.
It is a bit soon to really tell how this new track will play, if the nickname “big sandy” still applies, and whether it will be the type of surface that develops a bias quickly.
The race drew a competitive field of 10. The Likely and deserving favorite is Senior Officer who ran a good race while wide in the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga to come up a little bit short. A similar and possibly better trip is likely here and he is the one to beat under Flavien Prat.
I think there is a fair amount of pace in here and I lean to someone stalking it. While Senior Officer fits that bill as the favorite I will try and find a better price with as good or almost as good a chance at getting the win.
The two I looked at longest and hardest are Moonlight and T Kraft.
Moonlight is interesting and I think will be coming hard at the end. He has the rail for his third start in the Peter Miller barn, but he will be pretty far back with a lot to do. While I like the pace scenario he will get, I lean to someone closer and that brings me to T Kraft. He also exits the Forego and should get the type of stalking trip I am looking for here. The outside draw should give his rider Junior Alvarado some options. He is fast enough on Thorograph to win here and I think he is one of two or three in here who still may have his best race or races in front of him. The one knock I have is he does seem a tad better with Lasix which he will not have here but he is good enough without it to get home with the right trip. In multi-race wagers if the surrounding prices are right I’d use all three and go back hard a T Kraft, if not he’d be my single in the late sequences.
